Labour Department was established in 1912 and is one of 12 departments and agencies under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Human Resources. Before the 1960s, the Department's objectives is to 'protect the interests of workers in plantations and mines. In 1970, the Department of Labor merged with the Department of Industrial Relations. This combination focuses on the resolution of disputes involving employees and trade.
Penstruturan labor institutions continue to be made to realize the functions and responsibilities more effectively. Among the changes made was to separate from the Department of Labour Department of Industrial Relations (SRC) and then outlines the responsibilities and functions. Department of Labour is responsible maintaining the welfare, the interests of employees in creating harmony between employers and employees.
Under the Employment Services Division of the Manpower Department was merged with the Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JBSM) came into effect in February 2003. This merger has brought major changes to the JBSM involving an increase in functions such as collecting information on labor and job seekers placement in the private sector. Mergers undertaken to bring the change of name to the Department of Labour Department of Labour (Labour).
